Rapid and cost-effective diagnostic kit for Klebsiella pneumoniae and its antibiotic resistance genotype

Klebsiella pneumonia is a gram-negative bacteria that typically cause nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections. It shows a great deal of antibiotic resistance (multidrug-resistance (MDR) and extremely drug resistance (XDR)). Antibiotic resistance has been observed against β-lactams, aminoglycosides, quinolones, polymyxins, tigecycline group of antibiotics. It contributed to 5 million deaths, claiming over 1.27 million deaths worldwide in 2019 alone. (CDC 2022) Mortality ranges from 50% to 100% in patients with alcoholism and septicemia. Hence, rapid and cost-effective diagnostic kit for K. pneumoniae and identifying its antibiotic resistance is the need of the hour.

Solution:

We aim to develop a diagnostic kit for K. pneumoniae and its antibiotic resistance by adopting a Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) combined with microfluidics.

Advantages of this kit:

1) Rapid diagnosis: 1 day process from blood collection to results

2) Ease of use: Suitable for point-of-care settings, especially in resource-limited areas.

3) Simplified process: Reduces the need for extensive lab infrastructure and skilled personnel.
